Best Toys by Age: A Parent’s Guide from Newborn to 5 Years

What children are learning at each stage — and the kinds of toys that genuinely help.

0–6 months

Babies are learning to focus their eyes, grasp and bring things to their mouth. High-contrast cards, lightweight wooden rattles, natural teethers and a play gym for tummy time are all you need. Avoid anything small enough to fit through a toilet-roll tube.

6–12 months

Sitting and crawling unlock a new world. Object permanence boxes, stacking rings, rolling cylinders and textured balls teach cause and effect and encourage movement.

1–2 years

Walking, climbing and early problem solving. Push walkers, shape sorters, chunky pegboards and pikler-style climbers build balance and confidence.

2–3 years

Pretend play begins. Wooden kitchens, tool sets, building blocks and threading beads grow imagination and fine motor control.

3–5 years

Preschoolers are ready for letters, numbers and rules. Alphabet puzzles, counting boards, balance games and simple board games prepare them for school.
